Five Main genres of Video Games
A video game is basically a structured form of interactive play, often undertaken for fun or entertainment, and at times used as an educational instrument. While games can be played by both young and old people, they are mostly popular among teenagers. Games are different from work, which generally are carried out for personal remuneration, and from literature, that are more often a creative expression of literary or artistic elements. In general, games can be categorized into action/adventure, arcade, board, card, puzzle, simulation, sports, war and shooting games.
Adventure games are very much in vogue nowadays, with their ever-increasing popularity among all kinds of players, young as well as old. These games involve a high level of interaction between the player character and the storyline, to solve the mystery, while earning experience points, which represent the player’s advancement through the game. The most popular form of adventure games involve narrative, puzzles and action. Most popular adventure games are time management games (such as Sequence, which improve with your time), puzzles requiring calculation, brainteasers and memory, and action-packed adventure games featuring gun-fire, vehicle chases and rescuing the helpless. Most adventure games include the element of skill acquisition, with the player having to use his or her wits, skill, perception, reflexes and memory to overcome obstacles and achieve goals.
Action-adventures are also quite popular these days, owing to their popularity among men, women and kids. Similar to adventure games, action-adventures are typically narrative, with a certain degree of interactivity, but in this case, players have to take up some challenges within the game’s storyline, fighting against villains and other challenging characters, rather than solving a puzzle. However, unlike adventure games, action-adventures are multiplayer games, in which one player assumes the role of a character and plays the part of another player in the storyline of the game. An action-adventure game can have single player, multiplayer and co-op game modes.
Visual novels or VNs are hybrid games between a traditional point-and-click style of game mechanics, where the player navigates a game world by clicking on certain nodes, generating events in the storyline, and narrative-based text messages, in which the player controls the characters’ actions through selected words displayed on the keyboard. A good example of a visual novel is Mystery Manor, a text-based adventure game. It starts by revealing a few key facts about the plot, such as who the main characters are, how the story began and the full name of the main characters, and other interesting facts that will help the player understand the plot. The visual novel is then wrapped up with a conclusive conclusion, in which the game gives detailed instructions about the conclusion.
Other genres are simulation or adventure games, sports games and puzzle games. In addition to the five main genres discussed above, there are many subgenres of video games, each with their own distinct set of characteristics. The five main genres described above are quite popular, but not the only ones. There are numerous others such as adventure, simulation, horror, sports and puzzle games.
One example of a subgenre that is rapidly gaining popularity is called the life-simulation genre. This subgenre covers simulation games that let the player experience real life experiences, while playing a video game. For example, one type of life-simulation game may let you plan your family’s future while at work, while another may let you act as a CEO and take over the management of your own company. Another type of life-simulation game is in the style of a virtual platform game, where the player assumes the role of another character in an interactive story, while exploring the world.
