Vegetables are important parts of the plants which are commonly eaten by people or other animals as sustenance. The word “vegetable” derives from Latin and means “of or relating to a vegetable.” The original meaning therefore is still widely used and is usually applied to all edible vegetable matter, which includes the leaves, greens, stems, fruit, roots, and even the flowers. In order for a vegetable to be considered part of the human diet, it must meet a number of criteria. It should be legible, healthy, and safe for human consumption.

In Western countries, fruit sets are the most popular vegetable in the grocery stores. However, in more developed countries like South Africa and the Philippines, vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower are also popular. Cucumbers, melons, peas, carrots, potatoes, squash, spinach, beets, and other green leafy vegetables are also very popular. In Japan, the most popular vegetable is tofu, which is cooked in a frying pan until it becomes opaque yellow. The vegetable was brought to America by European settlers and became a part of the American diet.

In today’s food environment, the vegetable is an important part of the meal and a popular alternative to meat, dairy products, and carbohydrates. Vegetables provide vitamins, minerals, and protein. They provide the essential vitamins and nutrients our bodies need to maintain our health and energy. Fruits on the other hand are generally seen as an edible portion of a fruit salad, dessert, or ice cream, which are made with fruit but do not contain substantial amounts of vegetables.

A vegetable is a seedless plant with only a single stem. Some well known vegetables include beans, potatoes, squash, onions, spinach, asparagus, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Most edible fruit comes from the class of melons such as grapes, oranges, lemons, limes, or bananas. Cucumbers has peelable skin and mild flavor.

Vegetables provide much needed nutrition to the body. They are a source of carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals and fiber. They have a low glycemic index (this means that they raise the blood sugar levels slowly and evenly) and are easily digested. They are the most abundant natural food on earth and the most important source of plant tissue.

Many people choose to eat vegetables as an edible portion of their diet. Many have become chefs and make exotic flavors and presentations on their food.
